Where to Buy Furniture on Big Island →
Let me begin by saying, furniture is hard to come by on this island! We have few retailers and you have to get resourceful. If you’re coming from the mainland and planning to ship a container, I would definitely shop for furniture while you still can!
I get the furniture question all of the time, so here’s a handy little guide to where you can source furniture on-island.
KAILUA KONA
The ‘new industrial area’ aka Costco area is where you’re going to find most of your furniture retailers. Any furniture featured in the Costco warehouse is a hot commodity so get it while you can.
There’s Home World / SlumberWorld across the street from Costco. They have locations on all of the islands and can ship items over from other warehouses. They also offer delivery service.
On the same street as Costco you can find Bamboo & Teak, Bamboo Man, and Furnishings by Debbie (consignment).
A few other furniture stores off Kamanu St. in new industrial are: Statements, Plantation Interiors Teak Garden & Lanai, and BedMart. On Kanalani St. there’s Island Time Patio Furniture & More. I'm probably a missing a couple other consignment shops in this area - you just have to drive around and pull into each bay to scope out what your options are.
Another store to consider is Jeanne Marie Imports, which ships beautiful furniture from Indonesia but the price point is on the higher side. This is located in the Old Industrial area.
There are various thrift stores throughout Kona town that you can scope out for smaller items. People also sell furniture on Craig’s List, Facebook Marketplace, or OfferUp. Like I said, it’s slim pickin’s and you gotta make do with what’s already here.
Other options to consider are ordering furniture through Home Depot or Target, which both have locations in Hilo and Kailua Kona.
HILO
On Hilo side you’re going to find you can find another HomeWorld / SlumberWorld location and Yamada Furniture, both on Kinoole St. Some other stores to check out are Byron Booth Fine Furniture & Antique Restoration, ‘Iolani Furniture, Big Island Beds, BedMart, MattressFirm, and another Bamboo & Teak location.
At Yamada’s, everything you see in the showroom is in stock and ready to take home and they offer free delivery island wide. They also offer special ordering through their quick ship lines, with containers arriving monthly.
Internet Finds
I’ve scoured the internet high and low to buy beautiful modern sleek furniture from the mainland and by the time you’re checking out you discover that they don’t ship to Hawai’i or shipping costs more than the item you’re buying.
One online furniture store I’ve ordered from with reasonable shipping is Sabai Furniture. They have a selection of modern, easy to clean furniture that is made with sustainable materials. I purchased a couch from them and am very happy with it!
Wayfair will ship but the shipping is costly. You can order furniture from Crate & Barrel or CB2 but they require a $5,000 minimum purchase and charge a shipping fee on top of that - they’ll provide a shipping quote once you select which furniture items you want.
There are some furniture stores on Oahu that will ship inter island via Young Brothers for an additional shipping fee. One store I’ve ordered from is Valyou which is probably similar to Ikea quality. Once the item has shipped, you are responsible for transporting it from the Kawaihae Harbor once it arrives.
Furniture quality and aesthetics are very important to me. They can transform your home space and really set the vibe. I’m willing to pay for quality items that will last a while, but I’ve really struggled sourcing items.
Is there anything I’ve missed? If so please please comment below. I’ll update as I discover more options.
